Is there an age requirement?
Yes. You must be 18 years of age or older to participate in the Barber Beast on the Bay obstacle course challenge.
How will I know my wave time?
Wave times are set and listed below.
Can I receive a refund?
We cannot offer refunds under any circumstances. If a registrant cannot participate, their fee is considered a charitable donation to the Barber Foundation.
Is my registration transferable?
Unfortunately, due to insurance issues, you cannot transfer your registration to another person.
Can I register by phone or mail?
No. Registration for the obstacle course must be completed through our online application process. Participants in the do have the option of downloading a printed registration waiver or contacting us at BarberBeast@Barberinstitute.org or calling 814-480-6810 to receive a paper registration in the mail.
Will food be available?
Yes--Dunkin Donuts will be set up at 7:00 a.m. at the picnic pavilion at Waldameer; Famous Dave's and Qdoba will begin selling lunch and snack fare at 11:00 a.m. In addition, all concession stands will be open at Beaches 6, 8, 10 and 11 on Presque Isle.
All participants and volunteers (age 21 and older) will receive a free beer; will beer also be available for sale?
Yes, we will sell beer for $3 per cup beginning at 11:00 a.m.
What's the entertainment?
Our DJ will be blasting high intensity music and giving directions beginning at 7:30 a.m. We will also have continuous live music from noon-4:00 p.m. Chasing Moira winner of the 2012 Rock Erie Alternative Band of the Year Award, and Six-Year Stretch.
My family and friends are coming, too--can they see the course?
There are great areas along the beaches to see the obstacles and cheer participants on. Check on this course map to see the location of the obstacles.
Free shuttles are available from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. to take spectators throughout the course and bring participants back to the finish line at Waldameer. Just look for the green triangles on the map.
How do I participate with a team?
If you would like to participate with a team, please create a team on your online registration form and invite your friends and family to join your team. We will schedule your team with the same start time.
Can I skip an obstacle?
Yes, you may skip any obstacle and continue with the course.
What if I cannot swim?
You will get wet, but all water obstacles will be in shallow water. You always have the option of skipping any obstacle that involves water.
Will water and food be available throughout the course?
Yes, water stops will be located near certain obstacles throughout the course and these will be marked on your map and with signage. For spectators, all concession stands will be open at Presque Isle!
Is there a way to reduce the cost of registration?
YES! You can get a significant reduction by agreeing to fundraise. Just choose that option when you register, and you will receive all of the tools needed to let your friends, neighbors and family know that you are Beating the Beast and raising money to help children and adults with disabilities. All fundraisers can also win great prize packages!
Where should I park?
Enter Waldameer Park from Peninsula Drive; volunteers will direct you in the lot. Overflow parking is available in the Tom Ridge Center across from Waldameer. Spectators can also park at Presque Isle in any designated lots.
If I choose one of the shorter course lengths, or if my family does not want to drive on the course, will transportation be available?
YES! "The E," Erie's metropolitan transit authority, will provide free shuttle bus services from Waldameer Picnic Groves throughout the park, including to and from the Adapted Course, all day long. The stops are indicated on our map, and will be clearly marked with signs.
When can I pick up my packet?
You have two options for getting your packet, which will include your bib. Pre-registration will be offered on Friday, September 6 from 4-7 p.m. at the Barber National Institute North Lobby or at the Waldameer Picnic Groves beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7.
Can I get photos from the event?
YES! A team of photographers from R. Frank Photography will be taking photos throughout the course. You will receive an email after the event with instructions on how to locate your photos by your bib number. A portion of all photo sales will benefit the Barber Foundation.
